The digital transformation has brought a new economic dynamic with it, which has represented a great challenge for higher education worldwide. This concern has increased in recent years the academy's interest to study the impact of new economic dynamics in the educational system, which has triggered a significant increase in scientific articles oriented to this object of study. Therefore, this article aims to analyze the advances in research on trends in higher education and thus visualize which are the topics of most significant interest in this field. It is possible to conclude that educational innovation is the only way out that higher education institutions ensure their leading role as active university teaching and learning processes. For this, they must become open and flexible systems, which guarantee that content and technologies are in line with the digital economy and that they comply with the trends of the fourth industrial revolution.
