Diversity, equity, and inclusion in Latin American public relations

dc.descriptionHow Latin American professionals in Strategic Communication and Public Relations perceive and collaborate in the management of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in their organizations was the theme of the 2022-2023 edition of the Latin American Communication Monitor study, promoted by Euprera. It is understood that the DEI covers gender, ethnicity, age, physical and mental abilities, sexual orientation, nationality, and social class, issues that must be considered for corporate reputation. The LCM is a cross- cultural and longitudinal study, whose data is collected through an online questionnaire, available in Spanish and Portuguese. The statistical program for social sciences SPSS is used to organize and extract data. Regarding the analysis, the team uses up-to-date and highimpact bibliography in the academic field. Data collection was conducted for four months in 2022, resulting in a final sample of 1,134 professionals from 20 Latin countries, who work in diverse types of organizations. Among the results, it is noted that the DEI issue is present on the Communication departments agenda and agencies, however, all the dimensions that makeup diversity are not discussed yet. Age, gender, and sociodemographic status are recognized by one in two organizations. The other dimensions depend on the type of organization. For example, in public organizations, physical and mental disabilities are the dimension of the DEI most valued. Regarding the management of DEI initiatives, only 1/ 3 of the Communication departments are responsible, however, this percentage doubles if the advice given to other departments is considered. It is concluded that the practice of DEI is in the process of consolidation in Latin America, it is requiring concrete actions from the organizations to establish an organizational culture based on diversity and, from the Communication professionals, the development of skills to collaborate in this process. © 2024 Peter Lang Group AG, Lausanne.
