dc.descriptionLife skills in soldiers are key elements for their adaptation to military life, as they contribute to the development of personal resources that enable them to cope with the stress resulting from the demands of the military environment. The aim of this study was to understand the meaning of military life skills in soldiers of the Colombian National Army. To this end, a qualitative study was designed, involving content analysis of semi-structured interviews with 21 soldiers aged between 19 and 23 (M = 20,4; SD = 1,17) who had a history of psychoactive substance use and depression. These participants took part in psychoeducational workshops on resilience within the framework of a life skills training program in a military unit in Colombia. The analysis revealed that the categories social support, teamwork, adaptation to military life, emotional and behavioral regulation, and lessons from military life are associated with the category of life skills, and that, specifically, social support emerged as the skill that soldiers considered most important for adapting to military life. Additionally, it was found that skills such as resilience, proactivity, and job satisfaction enhance teamwork productivity. The findings on how soldiers understand life skills provide evidence for the development of programs aimed at promoting adaptation to military life and preventing mental health issues in young people serving in the military. © 2025, Universidad Catolica de Colombia.
