Introduction. The appropriation of best practices in Project Management (PM) is a mechanism to achieve success in organizations, that is, implementing a Project Management Office (PMO) as an organizational strategy is an opportunity in Higher Education Institutions (IES) to guide their projects towards achieving their corporate objectives, understanding that PMOs are established in the organic structure as a mechanism to enable and improve GP practices. Objective. Demonstrate the evolution of PMOs in the world, contextualize their main types, benefits and applicability in HEIs, and infer what their current level of application is in the field of HEIs in Colombia. Materials and methods. The scope is descriptive based on the review of 44 academic documents, using SCOPUS, WEB OF SCIENCE databases and other sources such as books and digital repositories. Results. The research shows the ability of PMOs to guide the management processes of university organizations through the application of GP methods, processes and tools. Conclusions. The insertion of a PMO in the organic structure of HEIs that adjusts to organizational strategic planning helps the successful realization of objectives and projects in universities. © (2024), (Corporacion Universitaria Lasallista).
